Making the most of the last 10 days of Ramadan
The final ten days of Ramadan hold profound significance for Muslims worldwide. This sacred period is dedicated to intensified worship, deep reflection, and increased acts of charity.
During these nights, Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power) is believed to occur – a night described in the Quran as “better than a thousand months.”
In 2025, the last ten days of Ramadan will likely be the nights of 20 March 2025 – 30 March 2025 [depending on moon sightings].
The Significance of Laylat al-Qadr
Laylat al-Qadr, also known as the Night of Decree, is commemorated as the occasion when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The Quran emphasises the unparalleled value of this night, stating that it surpasses the worth of a thousand months. In Surah Al-Qadr, the Holy Quran says:
Indeed, We sent this [Quran] down on the Night of Glory.
And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is?
The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months.
That night the angels and the spirit [angel Jibrail / Gabriel] descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every [decreed] matter.
It is all peace until the break of dawn.
While the exact timing of Laylat al-Qadr is not specified, it is traditionally sought during the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. Many believe the 27th night of Ramadan to be the Night of Power; however, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) advised his followers to “seek Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten days of Ramadan” (Bukhari and Muslim).
In these concluding days of Ramadan, Muslims are encouraged to heighten their spiritual practices. This includes increased recitation of the Quran, performing additional prayers such as Taraweeh and Tahajjud, and engaging in heartfelt supplications (dua).
The pursuit of Laylat al-Qadr through sincere worship is believed to yield immense rewards, as deeds performed on this night are magnified in virtue.
Amplifying Acts of Charity
Charitable giving, or Sadaqah, holds a central place in Ramadan, with its importance heightened during these final days. Contributing to those in need fulfils a spiritual obligation and embodies the essence of Ramadan’s teachings on compassion and generosity.
